Fabulous Grandparenting from a Distance — 10 Comments

  1. We lived on opposite ends of the country from my parents and my mom was desperate to stay in touch with my kids. A teacher, she had lots of school photos of herself and would buy second hand books, cut out her face and glue it to female characters in the books. She’d then send them to the kids, who got very excited every time they found Grammy in the story.

They also traveled a lot and sent postcards from all over the world. Carry a roll of stamps in your purse and whenever you see a fun postcard, send it off the adorable grandchildren. Kids get so little mail–especially today–a postcard in the mail is bound to be a thrill.

We use Skype, too, but I only live 15 miles from the adorable grandkids–it’s always a thrill when my son e-mails the kids want to see me NOW. 🙂

  2. Thank you Diana for this wonderful post. I too am a long distance grandmother and it is breaking my heart how seldom we can visit with them. I have just tried Skype and like it. I’m going to purchase a camcorder for them too instead of waiting for them to decide to get it.

I’ll be checking out all your links for grandmas. The Readeo.com looks very interesting as well.

  3. Diane, I’m lucky to have my grandchildren close. But my daughter and I had this conversation yesterday, saying we didn’t know how we’d manage if we lived at a distance! The ideas you present here are wonderful. And I’d never heard of Readeo.com. Very cool! Thanks for this excellent post. I hope I never have to use it!! LOL

    • Linda, I hope you never have to use it either!

I just learned about Readeo myself … nice thing is that you can use it when you are together also as well as if you are apart.

  4. I’m not a grandparent yet, but hope to be in God’s time. My daughter & son-in-love live 2 states away, so I know I’ll have to adapt to make a relationship work. Thanks for all the ideas; the Readeo sounds like a great idea. I can do skype.
