Happy New Year
The year 2012 ended on a sad note. Strong storms pounded the east coast, destroying homes and entire communities, leaving many families without homes before the holidays. More sadness and tragedy followed as precious little children and devoted teachers lost their lives at the hands of an evil and disturbed gunman. It’s difficult to wrap our minds around such horrific events.
What I find ironic is that when all is well in the universe, we dare not speak the name of God or pray in public forums lest we offend someone. But when tragedy strikes, pastors are called to the scene and pray vigils are a welcomed sight. When life is hard, people turn to God, because there is no place else to turn. God is the God of all comfort, hope, and peace. As Psalm 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
The year 2013 is before us. We do not know what the days ahead will bring, but there is sure to be sadness and sorrow as well as hope and joy. Having a relationship with God means walking with Him on a daily basis, not just running to him in times of trouble. He gives us strength for each day, no matter what life brings. Just as we turn to Him in times of tragedy, we must also turn to Him with praise and thanksgiving in times of blessing.
The beginning of a New Year often motivates us to make a new plan or move forward with greater determination to accomplish our goals. Whatever you plan to do in the coming year, seek God’s will and direction and move forward with Him.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.
Proverbs 16:3
If you have children in your home, use this New Year’s prayer at mealtime or bedtime to teach them to seek God’s guidance in their everyday lives:
Thank you for a brand new year;
fill our home with love and cheer.
Lead and guide us every day
in our work and in our play.
Help us, Lord, to trust in you
and seek your will in all we do.
Thank you for our daily bread,
and bless us in the days ahead.
In Jesus’ name, amen
(Prayer taken from Family Mealtime Prayers)
