Now, where to place the nativity scene? I put my best nativity set on top of the piano out of reach of curious little hands. I also place a less expensive and less fragile set on the coffee table so the children can play. Nearby is a basket of Christmas picture books that convey the true meaning of Christmas. The children play with the set reenacting what they know of the story. When a reader, adult or older child, is nearby the picture books are read and the pieces are moved to stage the story. Even the smallest child uses the books to turn the pages and retell the story, making the story come alive with the “lowly” placed nativity. 

What better way to create interest in reading from a very young age! What a blessing to see God’s word imprinted in the lives of our children at this most important time of the year.
