Peace and Quiet
Ahhh. There’s nothing like a bit of peace and quiet after a long day or a tough week….at least that’s what I’ve heard.
Actually, moments of peace and quiet are rare in my life. In fact, apart from my quiet time with the Lord in the morning, the rest of my day is filled with noise and activity. Even when I’m in the car, the first thing I often do is turn on the radio.
But there’s something to be said for quiet. A settling into an oasis where my senses are not bombarded with sights and sounds. It’s not something that comes naturally to me. By nature, I’m a go-go-go person. But I am learning the importance of creating times of quiet – not just at the start of the day, but taking breaks during the day, as well.
Still, I do look longingly at the optimistically tall pile of to-read books on the table in my den. And I purchased a new outdoor lounge chair in July, but here it is, November, and I’ve yet to try it out.
And what about our children? Is rest something they do only when they’re sick or asleep? Are we teaching them the value of quiet times? Do they see us building margin into our own lives? Do they see us starting the day with the Lord and in His Word?
Just as important, do we give them opportunities to participate in periods of quiet with us? To lie on a bed together – not for a nap – but to think about God, His creation, His love for us…and our love for Him. Start with two or three minutes if you have to, and work your way up from there.
Of course, there will be some wiggles (and not just on the part of the children!). But eventually the time will become invaluable in teaching yourself and your child how to develop a habit of meditating on the Lord. And who doesn’t need more of that?
