Out of the Mouth of Babes
If you want a lesson in faith, who would you look to for help: an adult or a child?
One would think adults who have processed what it means to believe in God—really believe—would be the most helpful in our own faith journeys.
But Jesus taught that we have much to learn about faith from children. Check out what He said:
“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3 ESV).
“Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14 ESV).
Children have a tremendous capacity for faith. For the most part, they don’t worry about where their next meal is coming from. They don’t think about whether they will have clothes to wear. They’re not anxious about whether they will have a place to sleep. Trust and faith in their parents come easily to them.
As we prepare to celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend, let’s remember how the children responded 2,000 years ago. During the week of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, He drove out the money changers from the Temple and healed the blind and lame. The religious leaders refused to acknowledge who Jesus was. But the children shouted praises.
“Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise” (Matthew 12:16 ESV).
Will you and I listen to the voice of children as they express their faith? Will we respond as children in our relationship with our heavenly Father?
“To such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”
