My Rating:
My Review: Along Came You by Karona Drummond and Illustrated by Estelle Corke is a board book for children (it is also available in a full-length paperback version). Along Came You is written from a mother’s perspective and conveys what life is like before and after having a child. Neither the before or after life is presented as better; both are honored for their differences. For example, the book opens with the following statement “Before you, my home was decorated in style. After you, my home is decorated in love.” The illustrations are bright, life-like and engaging. The language that is used in this book is perfect for toddlers.
What I really love about this story is that it is written in a way that every parent can relate to (i.e., biological, adoptive/foster, family members raising children). I was a foster parent and as I read this book I thought it was geared specifically towards adoptive/foster parenting. However, after reading more about this book, I realized it was written more to be applied to the parent child relationship in general.
I only had two minor issues with this book. 1) I wish the font was bigger and more child friendly. This is a toddler book and toddlers are beginning to notice everything. Bigger font would make it easier for them to notice the letters that are making up the words. 2) Since this book is from a Christian publisher, I thought it would include a reference to God (i.e., children are a blessing from God). However, no reference is made which is a little disappointing. I will acknowledge that the latter issue makes the book a perfect gift for religious and non-religious families alike.
