Trail Life
Most of us grew up either participating in a scouting program or knowing someone who was a Girl or Boy Scout. Scouting programs have historically focused on building confidence, character, citizenship, and fitness in girls and boys.
Unfortunately, both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have become embroiled in politically-correct philosophies. Many Christian families have expressed concern over changing policies and values. As a result, alternatives to the Girl and Boy Scout programs have developed to provide comparable programs while honoring traditional, biblical values.
American Heritage Girls (AHG) was founded in 1995 with the purpose of “building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country.” Similar to the Girl Scouts, AHG participants are able to earn badges, join in outdoor activities, and engage in service and leadership opportunities. As of their eighteenth anniversary, the organization reported 30,000 members in forty-eight states.
Now families have an alternative to the Boy Scouts, too. Trail Life USA (TLUSA) launched January 1, 2014. According to their press release, TLUSA began with 500 troops in forty-two states. With the motto, “Walk Worthy,” based on Colossians 1:10, their mission is to “guide generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure.”Chairman of the TLUSA Board, John Stemberger, is an Eagle Scout and a former scoutmaster with Boy Scouts of America. He described TLUSA this way: “This is not another church program to compete with Bible studies or youth groups. TLUSA is a masculine outdoor program that has the potential to change a young man’s life forever. Boys will love the fun and adventure-parents will love the focus on character and leadership.”
Of course, families may decide to maintain their association with the Girl and Boy Scout programs. There is always a need for Christians to be salt and light in a corrupt and dark world. But American Heritage Girls and Trail Life USA now provide a Christian alternative.
Which is the right choice for your family? That’s up to you.
