Trust and Obey
Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers,
and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
Proverbs 16:20
In 1887, following a meeting held by Dwight L. Moody, a young man stood to share his story. As he shared his story, it became clear to many that he didn’t know the Bible very well. The words he used were not exactly the words a mature Christian would use to explain his or her faith. At the end of his testimony he shared that he was unsure about what it meant to be a Christian, but what he wanted to do was trust and obey.
A man named Daniel Towner was so moved by the power of those three simple words that he quickly wrote them down. He then met with a man named John Sammis, who wrote the lyrics to Trust and Obey. When Daniel Towner composed the music, the song quickly became a favorite hymn in the churches.
Parents and teachers teach children the importance of trusting and obeying the adults in their lives. If children trust and obey their parents or guardians, things will go better for them. Parents know what is best for their children, and obedience keeps them safe.
As God’s children, that lesson is also for us. God knows what is best for us and obeying him will keep us safe in his arms. We need to trust him even when we don’t understand our circumstances. And we need to obey him, even when we think our way might be better. Those three little words are not only powerful, they can also be life changing.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
