The Mother’s Day Garden
Happy Mother’s Day weekend! Traditionally, Mother’s Day is a time for families to gather and to celebrate Mom. I have many cherished memories of Mother’s Day, but every year I am reminded of the tradition of a neighboring family. Every year they planted a Mother’s Day garden.
I really have no idea of the events leading up to the actual planting. I don’t know who chose the flowers or even if the kinds of flowers were the same from year to year. I just know that Mother’s Day afternoon was a time of transformation in their yard and, I’m sure, in their hearts.
The four children, from youngest to oldest, carefully planted the flowers. There was laughter, work, and an obvious sentiment of love for each other and for Mom. The flowers, too, were a reminder of the same as we headed into summer. Any time that my guests commented on the neighbor’s flower gardens, I related the story of their Mother’s Day garden tradition.
As you read this, perhaps the present state of your garden is like mine. Some faithful perennials are in bloom, but other parts of my garden areas are bare (or even sprouting a few weeds)… The annuals to plant in those places are patiently waiting in several containers on my porch.
I look forward to time with my family over the next few days and weeks. I cherish those dear hearts and the sweet family memories that God will once again transform into a beautiful garden for Him.
Her children arise and call her blessed. Proverbs 31:28 (NIV)
I pray that you will have a blessed Mother’s Day with those you love.
