Oreo® Faith
A well-known commercial asks:
“How do you eat an Oreo® cookie?”
Do you dunk it?
Pop the whole thing in your mouth?
Take little bites till it’s gone?
Or do you twist it apart, eat the filling, then eat the two cookie sides?
The reason I ask is that Oreo® cookies remind me of faith. Yes, faith. Stay with me and you’ll see what I mean…
Blind faith is often touted as true faith. Any other kind is claimed to be inferior. But is blind faith biblical?
Faith is a critical component of our salvation, yet it is defined in only one place in the entire Bible. The definition in Hebrews 11:1 mentions an “assurance about what we do not see.” From this phrase, it’s easy to conclude that our faith must be blind.
But not being able to see how God works behind the scenes does not mean our faith is blind.
The natural evidence of creation points to a Creator. The biblical record reveals God’s names, character, and ways. We have historical accounts, apart from the Bible, of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the testimony of Christians around the world through twenty centuries. Finally, every believer has the validating experience of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Living a life of faith requires a faith “sandwich.”
- We rest in God as the object of our faith. It always begins with Him
- We act boldly: our response to the faith He gives us.
- Then we rest in God as we trust Him for the results.
Unfortunately, much like children who pull apart a sandwich cookie to eat the cream and leave the cookie, we can make faith all about our own actions. We may focus on what we want to do for God. We may even try to impress Him with our service.
But our faith can take a lesson from the well-known Oreo®. Just as the two cookie sides are necessary to hold the cream filling, our actions must be constrained by the One in whom our faith rests and we must trust Him to use those actions as He chooses for His glory. It begins and ends with God. He “sandwiches” our efforts!
There’s nothing blind about biblical faith…and that’s a good thing.
Think about that the next time you eat an Oreo®!
