How Children Learn about God
“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.”
– Emilie Buchwald
Every parent wants his or her child to become a strong reader. Reading benefits a child in every stage of learning and growing.
However, Christian parents want more for their children than just to become good readers. They want their children to learn about God.
How do children learn about God?
Children learn about God in a number of ways.
Children Learn about God on the Laps of Their Parents
Parent-child reading time is so important for the young child. It provides a close time of bonding and the perfect connection to talking about God’s love. Having a number of child-friendly books – Bible storybooks and preschool devotionals – is a great way to talk about God. Reading Christian books helps children make the connection to God’s love. After all, children first learn of love from the interaction with their own parents.
Children Learn about God as They Become Readers
Soon, children begin to explore more about their faith through independent reading of the Bible and devotional books. They use the teachings of faith from their parents and church teachers to examine just what God’s Word means for their own lives.
Children Learn about God from the World Around Them
Eventually, all children question the world around them. Who made the flowers? Who made the ocean? How did the world begin? They seek answers from teachers and parents. Hopefully, they are guided to the Bible and Christian books that explain just how the world came to be.
