Get Out of the Rut
So many of us are creatures of habit. We do things the same way day after day and year after year because “that’s the way we’ve always done it.” While getting into a rut is bad enough in other areas of life, it’s especially dangerous in our spiritual life.
Consider how we think about the Lord. We may expect Him to work in our life today the same way He worked last month or last year. But God often surprises us.
For example, Jesus healed the blind on several different occasions. He healed one man by speaking the healing (Mark 10:52). Jesus healed another when He spit on his eyes and touched them (Mark 8:23-25). Still a third blind man was healed when Jesus used saliva to make a mud pack and commanded him to go wash it off. Three blind men, three creatively different methods of healing.
Hmmm…perhaps Jesus did this so we wouldn’t put God in a box, expecting Him to work only in predetermined ways. What we do know is that Jesus reached out to people in precisely the way that would touch that particular person’s heart. What’s really exciting is that as you get to know the Lord more intimately in your own life, you will find creative ways to describe our wonderfully creative Savior to others.
So as we tell children about Jesus, don’t be afraid to try new ways to bring the familiar stories of Christ’s love to their tender hearts. Do so, and you’ll help them remember what they’ve learned.
