When we share the story of Abraham and Sarah with little ones, we often share how God gave her a miracle baby when she was far too old to have a newborn. But the part of Sarah’s story that has always stopped me in my tracks is when the Lord visits Abraham and Sarah and promises the baby. “Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.” (Genesis 18:10-15 NIV)
Something about arguing with the Lord face to face, denying the truth in front of the One who knows everything, shakes me. How could she do that? How can I do that? How many times have I argued against something I know God wants me to do? How many times have I tried to deny or ignore the obvious when trying to convince myself that I am in the right?
I don’t know what look was in the Lord’s eyes when he looked at Sarah and called her dishonesty into the light, but I imagine it to have been one of steady, firm, love. He knew the truth. And He loved her. Just as He knows the truth and loves me. May God grant me the courage to admit my mistakes and let His truth penetrate every piece of my soul.
