Supermoon 2016
What is a Supermoon? It is when the moon is the closest to the earth making it appear much larger and brighter than usual. Tomorrow morning the moon will be closer to the earth than it has been since 1948, almost 70 years ago. It will appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual. For those of us in the US, the best chance to see the supermoon is tonight.
A near miss as I planned to post about the Supermoon on Monday, November 14, 2016 until I discovered that the Supermoon moment will be on Monday MORNING, not the evening and all will have already missed their chance to see it. So I’m pushing myself to get it up yet this evening instead since we don’t generally post on Sunday anyway.
If weather permits, this is an opportunity to capture the moment and share with your family a few Bible verses about the moon and the sun and stars as you go outside and enjoy this spectacle. If you happen to be a day late, you should still see a very large and beautiful moon in the sky. Here are a few Bible verses to share with your family.
God created the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day. Read Genesis 1:14-18 and see that these wonders not only give us light, but that they also mark the seasons. Psalm 104:19 Says it again. Scientists tell us today that the sun, moon, and stars not only mark the seasons, but that they cause them to happen. God certainly knew what he was doing when he created our world and universe.
Read Psalm 8 with your family under the night sky:
Psalm 8 New Living Translation (NLT)
For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by a stringed instrument.[a]
1 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
2 You have taught children and infants
to tell of your strength,[b]
silencing your enemies
and all who oppose you.
3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?[c]
5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God[d]
and crowned them[e] with glory and honor.
6 You gave them charge of everything you made,
putting all things under their authority—
7 the flocks and the herds
and all the wild animals,
8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that swims the ocean currents.
9 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Not only did God create all of the heavenly bodies, he counts the stars and knows them by name. See Psalm 147:4.
Isaiah tells about a time in the future when we will no longer need the sun or the moon for light. Read Isaiah 60:19-20. When we see Jesus in heaven, he will be all the light we will ever need, and our joy will never end.
