Christmas or Hanukkah
My children attended a Christian school which had Jewish children who celebrated Hanukkah. I remember my children coming home and telling me they wanted to be Jewish because the “Jewish kids got more presents.” Likewise, I remember one Jewish mother who was not too happy that her child felt left out of all the Christmas Christian activities. It is amazing that this was even an issue in a “Christian School” but it was.
There are many blended families who celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. My brother married a Jewish girl, and they raised their children to celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. As their children grew up, two of the four children became believers in Christ. They had a great heritage of learning about the Jewish customs and traditions, which is our Christian heritage.
The Apostle Paul wrote many of his letters encouraging that there be no division. The church should not be divided but be united. It starts with our children. We need to teach them to accept others who have different faiths and to love all as Jesus loves. As they learn this early, they will become future apologist building bridges of love to bring the gospel message to the lost.
My new book, God’s Gift, teaches children that Christmas and Hanukkah are about celebrating the gift God has given to His children. It’s not about how many presents are under the tree at Christmas or the eight days of presents for Hanukkah. It’s about God’s provision for those He loves. God gives the gift of the Messiah to the Christians and the gift of Light of to the Jews. The true gift from God is learned in this colorful holiday story!
Isaiah 60:1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”
