Thanksgiving: The Forgotten Holiday

We have a joke in our house. We call Thanksgiving the speed bump on the way to Christmas. That’s truly an unfortunate way of looking at a holiday that is all about giving thanks.
Though we should express our thanks to God on a daily basis, setting aside Thanksgiving as that special day we focus on being thankful for all God has given us puts us in the right frame of mind as we head into Advent. It focuses our hearts and minds on what is important: family, friends, the security and comfort of home, the peace that comes with knowing God is in control, and the knowledge that even in the darkest of hours God does not desert us.
As we gather around the Thanksgiving table this year, let us remember some of the verses that encourage us to give thanks. May you all have a blessed Thanksgiving.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. – Chronicles 16:34
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever! – Psalm 30:12
Enter His gates with thanksgiving, And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name. – Psalm 100:4

Good point, Cheryl. We tend to overeat then spend Thanksgiving weekend putting up Christmas decorations instead of taking a break and being thankful for what we have.
We really do rush through it. Sometimes we need to pause a moment and spend time in God’s presence.
I like how you put things into perspective – entering the Christmas season by first being thankful for God’s many blessings.
Thanks, Janice. My goal is to do my best to start the Christmas season off in the right frame of mind and focus on how blessed we are.
