Backyard Science with Parsley
I discovered that Black Swallowtail Butterflies lay eggs on parsley as that’s great food for caterpillars.
The green and yellow caterpillars attacked the parsley, munching away. A few days later I noticed cocoons.
A week later I looked again and spotted a wing creeping out from under a leaf. It continued to crawl until it made its way to the top of a leaf. Then it flew away.
Little creatures are great for backyard science. Try plating some parsley and see if caterpillars find their way to your garden. Look up other plants that attract butterflies.
Did you notice that this butterfly has different colors on the wing? The outside is mostly black with a row of yellow circles. The inside is brighter with bright blue and orange.
Read the story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar and talk about how things change. Then go on a hunt to find changes. Have leaves grown bigger, ants made new hills, or the clouds changed?
How has your child grown. Can they be measured and see they grew? Do they know it when shoes get tight? Or clothes seem to shrink?
Blessings,
