Hope for the Hurting Parent by Dr. MaryAnn Diorio
In my ministry to parents, I’ve met many who feel like failures. Their children have not turned out the way they had hoped. Sons and daughters have left home on bad terms, gotten involved in drugs and promiscuity, and have even gone to prison. Some of these children no longer want anything to do with their parents.
I have listened to story after story from broken-hearted mothers and fathers who haven’t seen or talked with their children in years. As a parent myself, my heart goes out to them. If you are such a parent, I urge you to rekindle your hope.
Hope, once lost, can be regained. Here are some practical steps to help you restore your hope for reconciliation with your children.
—Trust God. God can do anything, including restoring your relationship with your children. Isaiah 59:1 says this: “Listen! The LORD’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call.” Trust in the Lord’s mighty arm to save you. Trust that he hears the cries of your heart for your children. He does.
—Rejoice in the midst of your trial. The Word commands us to rejoice always, even in the midst of suffering. When we rejoice in the Lord, we express our trust in Him. Rejoice in the Lord as you wait for Him to restore your relationship with your children.
—Be grateful. God doesn’t tell us to give thanks for everything, but in everything. Thank Him for what He is doing in your children’s lives and in your life. Thanksgiving is a mark of total trust that God is working everything out for your good and for the good of your children.
—Pray. Throughout the day, talk to God about your children. Ask Him to bless them, to protect them, and to direct their paths in righteousness. He will.
—Cast your cares about your children on God. He is the only one who can carry them.
—Think only good thoughts about your children. Picture them returning home, reconciling with you, and enjoying a good relationship with you.
—Hold on to God’s Word about your children. Cling to this promise in Malachi 4: 6: “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers.”
As you apply these steps to your life, watch God move on your behalf.
