Devoted (A lesson I learned from verse journaling)
Have you ever heard of “verse journaling?” I hadn’t. But I saw a friend who was advertising it on social media and I knew that my devotional time could use a fresh approach.
And as I tried it, it caused me to see verses that I have read a million times in the past in a new light.
What did I do? Each day I took a verse and drew it. Artistically. (The best I could)
I tried to put into pictures, designs, or whatever came into my mind to represent the verse.
- Sometimes it was a list
- Sometimes it was an emphasized word
- Sometimes it was certain lettering or pictures…even stick figures
But it led to deeper insight and reflection, and allowed God’s word to penetrate into my heart, the core of my being.
For example: Acts 2:42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.”
Here is what I drew originally:
Here is a “prettier version” that I posted above:
I found myself thinking about those four categories long after I had moved on to the rest of my day.
I thought about what I am devoted to…
- My job (I’m a teacher)
- Marketing my book (I’m a new author)
- My family (I’m a wife and mom)
- My housework (I do that, too)
But could I say that I was devoted to prayer?
Could I say that I was devoted to fellowship?
To the breaking of bread?
To the apostles’ teaching?
And what would that look like if I was?
It was convicting! And compelling! And it called me into action!
I want to be known as a woman devoted to Christ. I love the picture the Scriptures paint in Acts 2:42 of what that means.
I’m glad for a new technique in my devotions to help me “see” the verse from a fresh perspective. And the amazing thing is, I think I memorized that verse without even trying. If you try verse journaling, I would love to hear what God reveals to you!
