Eat Your Ps
I had the pleasure of reading and endorsing Eat Your Ps by William Carter, Jr. This book is part memoir, part devotional, and part educational (if you want to learn more about peas!). But more than that, it’s an irresistible guide to personal spiritual discipline that can transform and deepen your faith.
William grew up in a middle-class African American neighborhood in Tennessee where he attended a mostly white school. Raised by a Methodist father and Pentecostal mother, he learned to build bridges to connect Christians of different denominations and shares seven basic yet powerful principles that all Christian need to practice in order to grow.
Each chapter highlights a different word beginning with the letter P and compares it to a certain type of pea. For example, “Eat Your Praises” is compared to the black-eyed pea, while “Eat Your Prayers” is compared to the green pea (his father grew large crops of peas!). This adds a dimension of interesting facts and a bit of humor to the chapters.
Comparing the Christian life to eating a variety of peas may seem a bit unorthodox until you dig into the pages and see the purpose and wisdom of the analogy. Whether you are Baptist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, or another denomination, the biblical principles creatively outlined in this book will deepen your spiritual journey.
The author writes with a warm, down-to-earth voice and makes you feel like he is your friend. The book is written mainly for adults, but the principles and practices outlined in the chapters can be taught to school-aged children as well. It would serve as a great family devotional around the dinner table and stimulate meaningful discussions. Kids will enjoy the fun facts about peas—and who knows—they may even learn to like them!
I’m giving this book seven smiles—one for each pea!
