Quinn Says Goodbye
I fell in love with a little owl named Quinn, in Christie Thomas’s picture book Quinn’s Promise Rock. Now there’s a second book in this series with the title Quinn Says Goodbye. One morning, as Quinn and her mama flew back to their nest, Quinn sees a small firefly near the nest. The firefly is injured, so Quinn and her mama care for it until it is better. Quinn becomes friends with the firefly and names him Blink. They spend many days together until one evening Blink was gone. Quinn is devastated with the loss of her friend and searches everywhere. Quinn’s mama explains why Blink had to leave and tells Quinn it’s okay to be sad.
The author weaves a biblical lesson into the story when Mama tells Quinn, “God doesn’t always stop bad things from happening. But he does promise that he will always be with you and he will never stop being your friend. Do you want to talk to him right now?” Quinn replies with a kid-friendly prayer, telling God how she feels and that she knows God will always be with her.
This book would be helpful for young children who are going through any kind of loss, such as losing a pet or having a grandparent pass away. At the end of the book are helpful notes for parents as well as some conversation starters for parents to use with their children.
Even if a child isn’t experiencing loss or grief, this book is a great resource to help children understand that in moments of sadness, God is their source of comfort.
I give this book 5 smiles and hope we get to see Quinn in another book in the series.
