Happy 6th (Half) Birthday, and Other Special Occasions
Happy Leap Day! In my family, we’re celebrating a birthday—of sorts. When our daughters were little, my husband started a tradition of celebrating their half-birthdays by taking them out for dinner and a movie( or whatever they wanted to do). It was his way of carving out some father-daughter time, and they always looked forward to it. Sweet 16½ was sweet, indeed—he pulled out all the stops. They flew from Seattle in a seaplane to Victoria, British Columbia, for high tea at the Empress Hotel!
When our youngest was born on August 29th, however, we soon realized we had an interesting problem—her half-birthdays landed on February 29th—a day that only comes around once every four years!
My husband and daughter have worked around it, of course, but it’s always fun to celebrate on the day. Today marks the 6th time they’ll be able to do that. Our daughter is now twenty-two and a half!
God established many times of celebration for his people. the Bible is full of feast days, jubilees, Sabbaths, and other times of celebration. The Psalmist wrote of celebrating God’s “abundant goodness” (Psalm 145: 7). For many of us, our families are our greatest blessing and a sure sign of his goodness to us. They’re definitely worth an extra celebration or two!
What do you do to celebrate the special blessings in your life? Does your family have any unique celebrations? Inspire us by sharing them in the comments!
