Reading Events Cancelled…What can we do?
Alerts are arriving by the moment. Phone, email, text messages. Events are cancelled or postponed to another time. From library book readings to author events to book signings and more, the world of reading and writing is changing at the blink of an eye. The coronavirus is causing discomfort in more ways than one.
What can we do when the scheduled children’s time at the local library is cancelled? Or perhaps preschool is closed due to the coronavirus? Parents and grandparents often take children to the library on a weekly basis. The interaction between children and the stories read aloud to them can bring happiness to all. When the schedule is cancelled for an unknown amount of time, children and adults can become worried.
One thing to do is have a special “reading” time at home. Use the same time of day that the children would be at the library or other reading event. At home, choose a few stories to read and discuss. Talk about how reading at home can be fun, too. If possible, have the children take turns reading. Make this a time of joy and comfort.
Also comforting is to allow the children to ask questions about the virus. Many children hear the word “virus” or “coronavirus” and don’t know what that means. They sense our worry and they need to be comforted. Remind them of your love and of God’s love.
Reading stories from the home book collection can help keep everyone involved during this time of uncertainty. Writing stories is another great way to share thoughts about the situation. Bring out the paper, pencils and crayons. Draw pictures to accompany the new stories created during this special home reading time.
Each moment of reading can be a blessing. Whether we are reading at home or attending a reading event, stories can help our imagination grow.
Are your reading events cancelled? Share some ways to continue reading with the children in your life.
