Stay-at Home Field Trips Ideas from Karen Whiting
With schools, libraries, and even zoos closed we need to engage our children in fun and learning. Consider creating your own fun stay-at-home field trips.
For example, choose to go on a trip to the zoo. Fix up a spot in your home with zoo animals (toys and stiffed animals),animal books, and photos. See if you can pull up a zoo online of animal sounds.
Prepare as you would for other outings with snacks and drinks to go. Let children take out toy cars to drive there of hop in an imaginary car made with chairs. As you travel chat about what you want to see at the zoo. Or sing a song like “I’m going to the zoo today.”
Once there, Enjoy the animals and talk about what each one can do. Discuss animal facts and read a book about an animal.Enjoy an animal snack like peanuts and veggies elephants like to eat or bananas that monkeys enjoy. Take some photos while you’re at the zoo with children posing with the animals. When done, hop back in the cars and chat about the fun you had.
You can go anywhere your imagination takes you.
- Set up a trip to a farm and enjoy dairy snacks, eggs, or fruits from trees.
- Go to outer space with darkening a room and hang Christmas lights. You can travel through the milky way!

Love this idea, Karen! Many zoos have webcams so you can even go online and see the live animals in the zoo. My daughter is doing a zoo unit with her 4 year old and he loves it! Thanks for sharing!
Such a great idea, Karen! We’re thinking of pretending to go camping and put up a tent in the backyard for the day. ( it’s too cold at night still)
I’ve been doing FB lives on what to do with kids at home. This week I will do one on praying with children showcasing Crystal Bowman’s new book and one on sending hugs in the mail (paper cut out kind of puppets).
Great ideas! Thank you.
