Magazines for Children
Grandson Rowan enjoys looking at books. He is almost three years old and is fascinated with dinosaurs, cars and trucks, animals and more. His collection of books is amazing. There are favorite stories he likes to have read each night before bed.
One of his other favorite things to look at is a magazine for children. The magazine subscription was a gift given to him by family members.
I remember receiving a magazine in the mail when I was a young girl. Opening the mailbox and finding something addressed to me was extra special. Our son also received a popular children’s magazine in the mail and looked forward each month for the newest issue to arrive.
I am thankful there are wonderful stories to read with Rowan. Also, very thankful for the magazines that encourage word building, math skills and creativity. Each month, the magazine brings a new possibility of adventure and fun on each page.
Before the coronavirus, medical offices and waiting rooms of all kinds usually had a table with books and magazines for children to view. I hope that when this virus is gone, those offices will again be filled with fun activities, books and magazines.
At this moment, waiting rooms are empty of any extra materials.
Have you ever viewed a magazine as a teaching tool? I remember when our son was young, we would read the articles over and over. The activity pages were completed. Coloring, word searches, jokes, and more were enjoyed.
After we completely finished reading and doing the activities, we would cut pictures and words out of the magazine to make a collage. Many uses for the magazine.
A magazine can be a great way to share time together. Read the stories aloud. Share the activities. Make a collage. When you are finished with the magazine, get excited about the arrival of the next issue.
Happy Magazine Reading,
Melissa Henderson
You’re right! Magazines have a special charm all their own!
Yes, I agree with you Nancy. Magazines are often overlooked, but they can be a great teaching tool. 🙂
Great idea. I always bought Ranger Rick magazines for my kids when they were little and they loved them
Yes, Ranger Rick is a great one. We enjoy Highlights magazine, too. 🙂
Great piece, Melissa!
Thank you Jill. Hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend. 🙂
Magazines are such a wealth of ideas and fun! Thank you for sharing.
Yes, Bonnie. I agree. Magazines are a wealth of ideas and fun. 🙂
Great post, Melissa! Authors often think of books first (because who doesn’t want to have a book with their name on the cover?!), but if you think of message reaching an audience first, magazines can be a rewarding way to go. I write often for Keys for Kids, a devotional magazine. It has a sister edition for teens, Unlocked. The bonus for authors is that the turn-around for response, publication, and payment is so much faster than book submissions. Getting accepted in magazines, newsletters, and anthologies as I was working on my first novel (sometimes even hearing back overnight) really encouraged me and let me know I was on the right track as a developing writer.
Wonderful wisdom Sonja! Thank you for sharing your journey. 🙂
Love this! When my kids were young, we received a monthly children’s magazine by subscription. It included stories, activities and more. Now I receive it for my grandchildren.
I am so glad to see people still subscribing to magazines. Whether online or print, magazines can be great tools. 🙂
I LOVED looking at kid magazines with my kids when mine were little. They felt so special receiving the magazines, and today they still (as preteens and teens) pick them up in the doctor’s offices and such and have fond memories. They are a great tool!
I still enjoy looking at the magazines for children. I am a kid at heart. 🙂
When I see a kid’s magazine in a waiting room (pre-COVID), I still pick it up to read!
Ava, I do the same thing. 🙂
Children’s magazines are such fun for kids and as one of your readers said, a wonderful place for writers to get published and reach a wide audience. Thanks for your post, Melissa!
You are welcome Kathy. Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂
