Wet Dinosaur Footprints on the Sidewalk
Heavy raindrops pounding the roof sounded like someone or something was stomping on the ceiling. Grandson Rowan and I listened and waited for the sounds to stop. Cupping our hands to our ears, we paused to wait for the next rumble of thunder or the drop, drop, heavy drops of rain.
The rain storm continued while we played inside. Racing toy cars in the foyer, playing hide and seek from stuffed animals and using the flashlight to make funny shapes on the walls, we shared laughter and love.
Once the rain stopped, I opened the front door and we looked at the sidewalk. Still too wet to play outside.
Blades of grass glistened as the clouds disappeared and sunshine began to fill the sky. Parents began their morning walks with babies in strollers. Neighbors riding bicycles passed by and waved to us. Maybe we would be able to play outside soon.
Rowan had a wonderful idea. He always has the best ideas.
“Mimi, let’s walk on the sidewalk and get our socks wet.”
“What a great idea, Rowan! Watch this!” I answered with a smile.
Stepping from the dry part of the porch and out onto the sidewalk, I tiptoed to a puddle. The water in the puddle tickled my toes. I laughed and showed Rowan my dripping wet socks. His giggles were hard to contain.
“Mimi, I want to do that!”
“Come on, Rowan. Get your socks wet.”
We splashed in the puddles on the sidewalk. The water sprayed up in the air and onto our clothes. More giggles.
Then, Rowan had another great idea.
“Let’s make dinosaur footprints on the sidewalk.” Rowan’s smile was huge. He was ready to be a dinosaur.
More stomping in the puddles and walking back to the dry part of the front porch.
“Hooray! We are making dinosaur footprints. We are dinosaurs, Mimi!”
We marched and stomped. We watched each footprint dry in the sun. The prints didn’t last long, but they lasted long enough to make us giggle.
When we finally went inside, I washed and dried the socks. Dinosaur footprints on the sidewalk were finished for now.
I look forward to the next rainstorm and making special memories with our grandson.
I will record this day in my journal. Maybe I will write a story about the day and the fun we enjoyed.
Have you made footprints on the sidewalk? What other unique raindrop activities can you share?
Blessings,
Melissa Henderson
