July 4th Book Idea and Extension Activities
The book America is… by Louise Borden and illustrated by Stacey Schuett, is a wonderful text to help your family celebrate Independence Day. The text has a poetic flow, and on each page spread it depicts many unique slices of life that encompass our vast country.
I love that it includes a map of all fifty states, the pledge of allegiance, and our national anthem. It highlights landforms and geography as well as the variety of people that make up our nation’s population. One page lists names of historical figures while another lists the freedoms that we enjoy. The last line is beautiful: “America is…the stories of all of us, told together. From continent to continent across the world, we are the nation whose name means freedom.”
I hope you and your family have a wonderful day together celebrating our freedom!
Here are a few discussion questions to use in a conversation with your child after you read this book together.
- What is freedom and what does it mean to have freedom?
- What are some of the freedoms that we enjoy in the United States of America?
- What are we celebrating on the 4th of July? How did this holiday originate?
- Talk through the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance and/or the Star-Spangled Banner. (the words are listed in the picture book)
- What is the freedom that means the most to you? (This is a deep question, but this is a great opportunity for you to share your perspective with your children.)

If I were to do a craft idea this year, I would choose this!
If you try one of the crafts or snacks, I would love to see a photo of the finished product or hear how it goes!
