Eyes Different Than Mine
Publishers are becoming more aware that we need diversity in picture books—not only in the illustrations and characters, but also in the subject matter. I am happy to feature a precious picture book written by Erin Johnson that was inspired by the loving relationship she has with her brother.
Eyes Different Than Mine by Erin Johnson is published by Friesen Press, and illustrated by Isabella Muzljakovich. I asked Erin to share more about the inspiration for her story. Here are her words:
I was inspired to write this book by my brother who was born when I was six years old. I marveled at his tiny fingers and noticed the palm of his hand had different lines than mine. I looked into his sparkling eyes and noticed they were a different shape than mine. My brother has Down syndrome, and my relationship with him growing up was full of joy.
We grew up to be best friends, and this book traces our relationship from childhood to adulthood. I wove in themes of acceptance, inclusion, and identity that acknowledge and celebrate the realities unique to a family that includes a child with Down syndrome. At the heart of the story is the strong bond between the siblings, highlighting the gifts they each bring to the relationship.
My target audience is children between the ages of 3-9 who are classmates or siblings of a child with a disability. There are no other children’s books specifically written for siblings of someone with a disability. I hope readers — whether siblings, classmates, or other family members — will feel seen and understood on their unique journey. I hope all readers are entertained and inspired by the beautiful relationship that can take place between someone with a disability and someone without.
Thank you, Erin. What a touching story! I’m sure your book will be a delightful blessing to many families.
Erin’s book can be found at the following sites: Amazon, Barnes & Noble online, Target online, or FriesenPress. It is also available on iBooks.
