Listen to the Bible – Family resources
We as authors of Christian books for children write with the hope that our readers will seek to know more about the Bible and what Jesus wants to teach us. For this reason, we write stories and devotions to serve as stepping stones to the full text of God’s Word.
When are our readers ready for the next step? In today’s age of technology we have so much at our fingertips including audio Bibles at the click of a mouse or a tap on the screen of a smart phone. Not only do we have audio readings, but we also have dramatized versions that capture our attention so effectively. I have recently learned of the New King James Version’s dramatized version which is excellent. The link is below.
There is another dramatic recording called Bible on the Go if you can find a set on CDs or DVDs. I once downloaded it from Audible.com, but it is no longer available. Perhaps you can find a set on eBay or some other site that offers used books and recordings. Bible on the Go was recorded with children’s voices reading from the New International Readers Version making it an exceptional choice for capturing the attention of children.
Children aren’t generally known for sitting still and listening to a recording, but if they have something to keep their hands occupied, they can listen to longer passages. There are many websites that offer Bible coloring pages, so children could color pictures that go with the passages they listen to. You can also discuss the passages after listening to them if it takes longer to color the picture than to listen to the passage. Older children and young adults might enjoy other crafts or hobbies such as knitting or creating bead necklaces while they listen. Working a puzzle might be another option for keeping children of all ages occupied as they listen.
These activities may also be helpful for the parents as they tackle longer passages for themselves. We can’t get too much of God’s word. My husband and I have listened to these in bed on some restless nights so that even those wakeful hours won’t be wasted.
What are your favorite audio Bibles? Do you have other suggestions for activities to do while listening to the Bible?
