Book Review: Teaching the Story
BOOK REVIEW: TEACHING THE STORY
As a writer, I know how difficult it can be to craft a story. And as a family that includes teachers in public school, teachers in private schools, and homeschooling mamas, I know that teaching the craft of writing can be a daunting task.
That’s one of the reasons I want to let you know about this amazing book, Teaching the Story: Fiction Writing in Grades 4-8. It’s a helpful, informative guide to teaching solid writing strategies to middle grade learners.
Here’s what the publisher says:
Teaching the Story is “a book of mini-lessons that takes the mystery out of teaching creative writing to students in grades four through eight! Teaching students the craft of short story writing is a great way to challenge them and channel their creative energy into a written format. But writing fiction is more than strictly creative—it will also help your students prepare for standardized testing and for writing academically. As students move through the process of brainstorming thoughts to writing a cohesive story, they will learn the importance of planning and writing in a logical, sequential manner. In addition, your students will critique their own and their peers’ writing, so these lessons will develop their critical-thinking skills as they analyze and evaluate. This edition includes almost twenty new lessons that infuse technology into the writing process and allow for more differentiation and personalization in your classroom. These lessons will inspire even the most reluctant writers.”
I first learned of this book when I connected with its author, the amazing Carol Baldwin. Carol is the coordinator for a Christian blog I contribute to for children’s writers at Write2Ignite. (Click here to read and follow our blog!) Among the many hats she wears, Carol is a children’s author, a blogger, a book reviewer, and an educator.
Carol teaches writing workshops for adults, kids, and homeschoolers. She presents workshops at educational conferences and writer’s conferences. And her heart is to help others learn the craft of writing so that they can tell their story to the world. That’s why she wrote, Teaching the Story.
