A Biblical Timeline of Ancient History
Have you ever wondered how those dates for an historic event got in the footnotes of your Bible? God called Abraham to leave Ur in 1922 BC. Joseph sold into Egypt in 1728 BC. Nehemiah completed rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem in 454 BC. And more!
These dates, including how God created the heavens and the earth in 4004 BC all come from an amazing book by Archbishop James Ussher who lived nearly 400 years ago!
James Ussher was an influential father in Church history. An Anglican Archbishop in the Church of Ireland, he was in the forefront of current church politics. A serious scholar and writer, he owned many books and researched countless primary sources, many of which are lost to history today. His most famous and lasting work was a detailed chronology of ancient history and biblical events from creation to the first century AD, known as The Annals of the World.
Since its publication in 1650, Ussher’s dating and chronology have been used by many publishers of the Bible. Dates included in the sidebars or margin notes of many editions of the Bible were based on the careful calculations of James Ussher.
However, sceptics of the Bible challenge Ussher’s dating system with the claim, “Ussher’s chronology and dates don’t hold any credibility in the scientific community.” When we hear that argument, we need to ask, “Which scientific community?”
There are two main scientific communities. Those who hold the Bible as the final authority on every question regarding science, history, or other topics. And those who don’t.
There are numerous highly educated and highly qualified scientists and historians who believe that the Bible is the final authority. Yes, they have faith in the Bible, but their faith is founded on a tremendous quantity of factual evidence. In the circle of this scientific community, the chronology and dates of James Ussher’s, The Annals of the World, are held in high esteem as one of the most accurate dating systems of ancient history known today.
When we are challenged by someone who states that Ussher’s chronology doesn’t hold any credibility in the scientific community, we can assume they are referring to the community of scientists who believe in evolution. We can assure them with confidence that Ussher’s chronology and dates are considered highly accurate within a large community of scientists and historians who have carefully tested his dates against modern archaeological finds and current historical data.
As parents and grandparents, homeschooling mamas and children’s ministry workers, Christian school teachers and public school teachers, it is worth our investment of time and money to become familiar with James Ussher’s The Annals of the World and its timeline for history. Not only does it debunk the fabricated timeline of evolutionists, but it offers clear proof and concise explanations of detailed historical events that have taken place in a world created by a loving and perfect God, and not a universe that supposedly exploded into existence by chance.
