Beat the Heat!
Hello from Karen Whiting! I hope you are enjoying the summer and staying cool. God’s people spent forty years wandering a desert. They experienced lots of heat and thirst. Hosea 13:5 reminds people that God cared for them in the dry and thirsty land. Talk about how it must be to live in a desert.
Jesus understood the need for a drink too. Read John 4, especially verse 14. Jesus went to a well for a drink and spoke to a woman about living water. When you feel thirsty this summer think about living water from Jesus that helps your soul. Enjoy fun with ice to beat the heat.
- Shave some to make a slushy or pour a drink over to make an ice cone.
- Grab a bucket of ice and make a sculpture. As the cubes melt a little they will esily stick together.
- Hold ice cube races and see who gets their ice melting the fastest. Try placing the cubes on various colors and types of paper.
- Hold an ice race. Find an outdoor spot with an incline and let the cubes slide down to see which one wins.
- Have an ice cube toss and see how long you can toss it before it melts. It may melt faster if it is dropped onto hot ground.
Summer recipe: Make a green tea spritz for the summer. It’s refreshing, helps your skin, and even conditions and strengthens hair. .Green tea contains natural antioxidants.
- Steep green tea.
- Pour into a spray container
- Squirt on face to feel refreshed.
Add Berries to the cool fun
Summer is time for various berries to ripen and the juicy fruit also helps when your are thirsty. Have fun picking if you have a farm that allows picking or wild berries near your home. Otherwise visit a farmer’s market and look for fresh grown berries. They’ll be juicy and colorful.
Use the berries for many treats:
- Wash and eat them raw.
- You can dip raw fruits in whipped cream, caramel, or chocolate
- Make a berry shortcake
- Slice up some berries and use them to top ice cream or cake
- Make a berry pie
- Make a fruit salad
- Make berry turnovers
- Make berry slushies by mixing ice and squished berries
- Make a berry salsa to dress up chicken
- Make berry skewers
- Make berry dessert sandwiches by placing sliced berries between two slices of pound cake of wafer cookies
- Cut fruit shapes with cookie cutters and layer them
- Make frozen yogurt pops by blending plain yogurt, berries, and a little honey. Pour in a mold, add a popsicle stick, and freeze.
Add a spiritual lesson with your berries
- Read about the fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 and talk about how that fruit can be used many ways to help people and have a happy home.
- Read Genesis 1 and chat about all the fruits God created. Praise Him and thank Him for your favorites!
- Talk about how the Bible calls children the fruit of the womb and how children are a blessing!
