Book Review: Guess How Much God Loves You by Karen Ferguson
We can probably all agree that it’s getting more difficult to find uplifting and appropriate picture books that reflect the Christian values we want to instill in our children. And with all the challenging situations and unrest in today’s world, it’s more important than ever to ground our youngsters in Biblical truth, assure them of God’s love, and point them to the One who never ever changes—no matter what is happening around us.
Thankfully, I can highly recommend a brand-new picture book by Karen Ferguson to fill a space on your bookshelf! It’s called Guess How Much God Loves You, and readers, both old and young alike, will enjoy this heartwarming story and interaction between a seven-year-old girl named Lucy (who is apparently experiencing some bullying at school) and her Papa Joe. Ultimately, it’s a book that answers Lucy’s all-important question—does God really love me? And if so, how do I know? Of course, many children have the same questions, so they will relate to these concerns and learn all about God’s love—right along with Lucy.
Guess How Much God Loves You is the first installment in Karen’s planned five-book series, and this book focuses on Creation and God’s love for His children in creating them in the first place! As a snippet of the text recounts:
“Lucy, God chose to create people, and He chose to create you. No matter what anyone says to you, remember that God’s love for you is never-changing, never-failing, and never-ending.”
What a comforting statement for Lucy—and for us!
Additionally, Papa Joe uses simple and fun, yet biblically sound language, to share the story of Creation with his granddaughter, all while Lucy imagines the events in her mind. The illustrations are eye-catching and colorful and will capture a child’s imagination.
Of course, the intent and flow of the story are by design. In a previous interview on her blog, CCA contributor Jarm Del Boccio asked Karen what spiritual truths she wanted children to understand after reading the book. Karen’s answer was:
Three simple but powerful truths: God is the Creator of the world, God created them in His image, and God loves them. These are essential truths that will help carry children through the ups and downs, and twists and turns, of life as they grow into young adults.
I wholeheartedly believe that Karen has created a soon-to-be treasured picture book that has more than surpassed her desire to make a difference in the lives of her readers. Guess How Much God Loves You can also most assuredly be used as a tool for parents (or grandparents) to springboard into meaningful discussions with their young ones if/when difficult situations arise. Children will also be assured of having a Heavenly Father who will never leave nor forsake them, no matter what happens! In fact, there are questions and Bible verses at the back of the book that are very helpful.
I really enjoyed this delightful picture book, and I look forward to reading the next books in the series featuring Lucy Lu and her wise grandfather, Papa Joe!
