Let’s Celebrate Black History Month!
February is Black History Month. Even though it’s great to celebrate Black History every month of the year, February is the month chosen as a special reminder of how important these history-makers are. Each person has a story to tell and every person benefits from learning about these inspiring and motivating heroes.
As a children’s writer, I love to write about history. I write about the history of the Bible for kids. I write about American history for kids. I write about ancient history, the history of the Middle Ages, the history of the Renaissance, and the history of modern times. Plus, I write about Black History for kids, too!
D is for Drinking Gourd: An African American Alphabet features the accomplishments and achievements of history-makers from A to Z. Each inspirational story is told at two different levels: A rhyming verse for the younger set to hear as well as informational sidebars for teens and adults to learn from. Perfect for all ages! A Kid’s Guide to African American History is for the younger set of elementary-age kids. Bursting with historic-based activities, its comprehensive history is great for classrooms, homeschools, and grandkids with hands-on learning. CLICK HERE for classroom resources…and more!
A Dangerous Search is great for the readers in your family. This chapter book follows twelve-year-old Tobias from Lexington to Bunker Hill as he searches for his uncle in Boston, just as the Revolutionary War begins!
America’s Black Founders highlights the special achievements of the men and women who helped build America from its earliest days. See the historic sites and learn the history behind these brave history-makers of America’s founding days. CLICK HERE for a free teacher’s guide…and more!
Are you a homeschooling family? Are you a classroom teacher or librarian? Readers Theater for African American History has a great selection of readers theater plays meant to be read aloud by your students. With staging suggestions and interesting casts of characters, history comes to life for your upper elementary and middle grade learners!
Frederick Douglass for Kids is a book I wrote about my personal American hero. Douglass truly believed one person can make a difference…and he did! If you want to inspire your kids, grandkids, students and library visitors to stand up and shine their light, this is the book to read. It also has exciting historic-based activities that help kids get engaged with history. A personal highlight for me was to walk in the footsteps of this great man as I took many of the photographs that appear in this book. CLICK HERE for a free teacher’s guide…and more!
So let’s celebrate African American history and these amazing history makers this month with the kids in our life. What plans do you have to celebrate? Share them in the comments below.
