A Devotional Adventure for Kids
When my children were young, I appreciated engaging devotional books I could share with them. I remember one with a treasure hunt theme my son particularly enjoyed. Every night, he looked forward to the next installment in the adventure, and the thought-provoking questions at the end always provided an opportunity to discuss faith.
Because of my experience, I was thrilled when Brock Eastman’s new book, Edge of the Galaxy, hit the market. The devotional follows a family of space travelers making a home on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. The settlers are an advanced crew, working as a team to helpi to prepare Titan for the arrival of more space explorers and their families. A few favorite chapters of mine had Gavin Greystone, the main character, getting left behind to guard the complex and then, after a meteor shower, playing a key role in saving the colony. There’s a life lesson there! How many times do our kids complain about the task we give them to do? Here, we see how even small things make a big difference. (Although in this case, Gavin had to pull off some pretty big things!) The dynamics between the siblings and their parents is spot on. And wow, does Gavin get into some nail-biting situations!
In addition to giving us a fun, fictional tale, Eastman, a former producer and podcast host for Adventures in Odyssey, peppers the text with fascinating scientific tidbits about this alien environment. (For example, did you know that Saturn’s moon, Titan, is second largest moon in our galaxy? And it has lakes and rivers of liquid methane!) The structure is consistent throughout; each section has a story with a faith-filled lesson, a Scripture reference, and questions for the reader to consider. In addition, an AI character gives some narration to help unpack all the rich insights in the story.
Paired with a touch of humor and beautiful color illustrations, the book reminds me of a combination of a fast-paced chapter book and a graphic novel. Best of all, this is a book that would appeal to the sometimes tough-to-reach 8-12 years-old middle school age group. You can preview it on Amazon or visit Brock’s website at https://www.brockeastman.com/ . I hope you and your kids enjoy this space adventure devotional as much as I did!
