God, I Feel Sad

Children experience a wide range of emotions just like adults do. But sometimes, it’s hard for adults to help children understand why they feel a certain way and how to process their emotions. That’s why I am thrilled to feature an important new picture book God, I Feel Sad: Bringing Big Emotions to a Bigger God.
I received an advanced copy of this wonderful picture book, and it is beautifully done. Licensed counselor Michelle Nietert and prolific author Tama Fortner, help children explore what it means to feel their sadness and discover how to manage their emotions in a healthy way. The authors do a fabulous job of helping children understand and process feelings of sadness. With kid-friendly language, and without being condescending, the text and illustrations give an honest portrayal of what sadness is and why we sometimes feel that way. The book doesn’t offer any quick or superficial fixes, but rather, walks the child through the process of understanding and managing their emotions, and finding hope for better days ahead.
When I received this book, little did I know how soon I would use it with my grandchildren. My son’s family was deeply grieving the loss of a dad in their neighborhood. My nine-year-old twin grandsons openly wept at his funeral. This was the dad who played basketball with the neighbor kids. He was known for the biggest and best fireworks display on the Fourth of July, and in December, his house lit up the street with his extravagant Christmas lights.
I read God, I Feel Sad to my grandsons after the funeral. They are two busy boys who usually talk nonstop! But as I read the book they sat quietly and absorbed every word. After we finished, I asked them if they liked the book and they both said yes. Then one of them asked, “Can we keep the book so the next time I’m sad I can read it again?” I told of course they could keep it! Then I went to the bookstore and bought another copy!
Thank you, Michelle and Tama for this much needed book that will help parents talk to their children about their feelings when they are sad. And by the way–it helped me process my feelings too!

This sounds like a powerful book that is much needed in today’s world. There is much sadness for children to have to deal with. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you, Janice! Our goal was to give kids practical tools for managing their emotions, all while encouraging them to take those emotions to God. 🙂
Thank you for this review. Nothing better than an endorsement by a child!
I agree, Karen! Kids are the best endorsers! 🙂
Thank you for this review of the book, “God I Feel Sad”. I am our church library coordinator and often get asked what books may help when a child feels a loss. This looks like a good addition to our church library.
Crystal, thank you for this wonderful review! I’m so sorry for your grandsons’ loss of their neighborhood friend, but I’m so grateful that our little book was able to minister them.
Much love, Tama
Thank you for sharing this wonderful review with us. Children today deal with so many difficult challenges. It’s important to give them books that help them work through their emotions. This sounds like an excellent book to share with them.
This sounds lovely–and greatly needed. Thanks, Crystal!
