Toddler Theology by Cathy D. Dudley – review
When I was asked to review Toddler Theology, Childlike Faith for Everyone by Cathy D. Dudley, I was hesitant. Too many people think it’s easy to write for children, and to write theology for them seemed even more out of reach. But WHAT A NICE SURPRISE!
Cathy D. Dudley not only did it, she did it beautifully and simply – so simple that even a toddler would understand it. The language is conversational as if Jesus were telling the child who he is and where he lives with God and the Holy Spirit. Jesus tells how he has always loved little children and why he wants to be their friend and to enjoy listening to their prayers. Christmas and Easter are explained in simple terms, along with the possibility of receiving a ticket to heaven.
The art is simple and child-like, yet profoundly appropriate. Christ is represented with abstract outlines similar to a gingerbread boy with expressive body language, highlighting, and clouds. Human children are represented with happy lively stick figures.
I highly recommend this book for children beginning as soon as they are able to listen, but older children will also enjoy this book as the theology is sound and appropriate for many age levels.
Cathy D. Dudley has written a second book, Faith, Family, & Fun, a book of “Monthly Lessons to Color and Connect with God’s Love.” Each lesson includes a brief engaging story about real life situations with children and families which provide human examples of the character of Jesus and of God. Each lesson includes a Bible verse, a prayer, an activity, an “everyday living” challenge for children, and a picture to color that goes with the story. Two of the lessons are designed for Easter and for Christmas. Faith, Family, & Fun is rich with the kinds of wisdom that children can grab hold of, and is presented with a lively kid-friendly approach. I highly recommend both of these books.
