Roadtripping this summer?
This summer my family flew out to Arizona, rented a car and did some ROADTRIPPING! Of course now that my kids are older, a road trip is a little less daunting. But I remember the good ‘ole days of traveling with little ones. Yes, it was hard work to travel with kids and not always easy, but the memories we created are priceless and it was worth any struggle that we encountered. If you haven’t ventured out on a road trip, start small 🙂 but go for it!
Here are three picture books to get your family warmed up to the idea of a road trip:
Rattletrap Car by Phyllis Root and illustrated by Jill Barton is about a family heading to the lake to cool off. You will love the catchy rhythm and rhyme along with the fun solutions they invent to keep their car running. My favorite is the razzleberry dazzleberry snazzleberry fizz! Phyllis Root is one of my all-time favorite authors for kid lit. When my kids were little, I would always look for her work on the shelves at the library.
The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Car Trip is the saga of the famous bear family on a road tirp of their own. The plot takes them to places in Bear Country similar to Mr Rushmore, Niagara Falls, and a battlefield. I love the realistic details of family vacations that will make you smile.
City Signs by Zoran Millich is a book of just that–signs you might see in a city or on a road trip. It is perfect for the beginning reader. If you are going on a road trip, a great way to pass the time is to make a sign scavenger hunt. (See my Pinterest Board for creators who have already done the hard work for you!)
If you are looking for practical road-tripping tips, snack ideas, pre-made free printables for your road trip, or other ways to keep your kids from binging on screens, check out my curated Road Trip with Kids Pinterest Board and be inspired!
One of my favorite pins is by Lovin’ Life with Littles. She has 11 Last Minute Car Games that take NO PREPARATION! Our family played many of these games, along with Would you Rather?, Mad Libs, Catchphrase, and more!
Take a risk and go on a ROAD TRIP!
What about you? What are you doing this summer? Do you like traveling by car? Do you have any tips for young families? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
