Helping Kids Learn to Handle Money
Money is a big subject, but Money Mike & The Gang™ show you how to teach it to your little ones. We know from reading the Scriptures that money is an important topic. How we deal with it, and how we think and feel about it, matter to God. It also makes a big difference in the lives of the children who are watching us. Are we wise with what God has entrusted to us? Are we teaching them to be wise?
Money is Easy is the first book in the Money Mike & The Gang™ children’s book series. It’s a fun, engaging picture book that makes it easy to start to talk to kids as young as preschool about what money is and how to use it wisely.
According to husband and wife author team Charles and Angela Todd, Money is Easy has three goals:
- Break the misconception that money is difficult
- Lose the cycle of debt
- Break a poverty mentality
It is fitting that the book outlines three key steps to handling money wisely:
- Tithe
- Save
- Invest (in others)
The book begins by explaining what money is and ways that we earn it. It then explains how to prayerfully and wisely handle the money we have earned. The pictures are bright, colorful, and fun. I love Money Mike the tree and his branches full of money!
The most impressive feature of this book is its glossary. You may wonder how a glossary can be an exceptional feature, but this is much more than a simple list of words and definitions! The glossary is designed to help parents go deeper as they talk to their children about money. It includes more than 30 keywords from the book. In addition to a definition for each word, the glossary also includes a Bible verse for every word. Some examples are:
Blessed (adj): Divinely or supremely favored; fortunate; “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8 (NIV)
Spend (v): To pay out, disburse, or expend; dispose of (money, wealth, resources, etc.); “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.” Proverbs 21:20 (TLB)
I think this is a great book that makes a hard subject easy to explain to children. My only word of caution for parents is that the book presents the principles as very certain – if you do __________ then _________ will happen. The authors have shared Scripture references for the principles taught. As there are varying views on the proper understanding of certain Scriptures, you’ll want to discuss these verses and your understanding of them with your children.
