How to help your child know Jesus. A Book Review.
Unleash the power of curiosity in your child as you explore the pages of this new Christian Children’s book: ‘Jesus Were You Little?’ It will ignite meaningful conversations and nurture a genuine connection with Jesus. Sally Metzger’s book, ‘Jesus Were You Little?’ offers a delightful and insightful approach to helping your child know Jesus on a personal level. In this blog post, we will explore this heartwarming book and provide tips on using it to nurture your child’s understanding and connection with Jesus.
Jesus in a Child’s World
A child is the center of their world. They cannot see situations without themselves being the main character. Therefore, it can be challenging to help them understand who Jesus is and what He did for them long before they entered the world. I recently came across the sweetest book from OSV Kids that allows children to connect with Jesus at their level. It is called ‘Jesus Were You Little?’ Sally Metzger is the author, and Caroline Baker Mazure beautifully illustrates it.
A common theme that teachers use in Early Childhood Education is “All About Me.” This idea is easy for young children to relate to because everything in their world is about them. As a Christian educator and school administrator, I struggled to shift their thinking to become “All about Jesus.” Eventually, I discovered that Jesus met them in their world and that He is all about them. The simple fact that they are the center of their world is okay because it allows them to understand that Jesus came to the world for them.
Understanding the Book
Unlike other books that may present Jesus as an unattainable figure, this book brings Jesus down to a child’s level. It explores what it might have been like for Him as a little boy, making Him more familiar to young hearts. The text includes a poem that contains a repetitive phrase:
“Jesus, were you little? Just like me? I wonder, Jesus, did you ever…”

Then, as you turn the page, the illustrations switch from a child doing things in today’s world to Jesus as a child doing the same activities in his time. For example, the text reads,
“Tell a joke and laugh out loud? Ride tall shoulders in a crowd?

The Main Point of the Story
The best part, however, is near the end of the book when the lines of the poem switch to: “Jesus, were you little? Just for me? The words shift to Jesus’ love and plan to be with us today.
‘Jesus, Were You Little?’ enriches your child’s spiritual growth by connecting Jesus to their world. This Christian Children’s book can pave the way for a lifelong love and connection with Jesus.
More books to help your child know Jesus
Another great way to help your child know Jesus is to introduce them to The Little Pot and the other vessels created by The Potter. These books illustrate the relationship we can have with our creator. For example, The Little Pot is a vessel that holds many items for the potter. As it does, it tries to discover its purpose. Eventually, Little Pot learns it is a fruit pot in which the potter grows his fruit. Little Pot’s process to grow strawberries mirrors how our creator produces the fruit of the Spirit through us. You can sign up to be a fruit pot just like The Little Pot here.
