Five Kid-Friendly Fall Books
I grew up in the Midwest, where nature gears up for Fall. The leaves darken into rich shades of gold and amber and litter the ground, making evening walks a crunchy delight. Local farmers open seasonal harvest markets, offering bright orange pumpkins, apples dripping in caramel, cider flavored with a hint of cinnamon, and hayrides over lumpy cornfields.
Fall also offers a great time to snuggle up with a cozy book. With Halloween around the corner, some kids will want to reach for spooky tales. What are some good Christian alternatives to this trend? I’ve listed five books that your kids might enjoy this season. Best of all, none of them have witches or ghosts in them. A short description will let you know what each one is about, and every title also has a link you can follow should you want to make a purchase.
So, here we go!
The Pumpkin Patch Parable by Liz Curtis Higgins. This board book (for kids ages 2-5 years) has been around for almost twenty years. While highlighting autumn blessings, the story focuses on a farmer who carves a pumpkin jack-o-lantern style so light can shine through it. The tale shares the gospel in a kid-friendly parable.
Another charming pumpkin-themed board book is The Pumpkin Prayer by Amy Parker. This rhyming story celebrates God’s promises. It features pumpkins but is also full of other seasonal pictures to warm the heart.
God’s Blessings of Fall by Jean Matthew Hall provides a lyrical look at the fall season. Packed with sights, smells, and sounds, this book appeals to the senses. Wind, leaves, squirrels, pie, and much more are included in God’s blessings of fall.
Another board book ladened with fall images and written in rhyme is Glen Nellist’s Snuggle Time Fall Blessings. With adorable illustrations, Nellist captures all the feel-good events of the season—pumpkin carving, apple pie, jumping into leave piles, hayrides, and more.
Along the same lines comes Hannah C. Hall’s book God Bless Our Fall. Like Nellist’s book, it is written in rhyme and features many of the same seasonal events we all cherish.
These five titles are just a few of the books that caught my eye. Can you add more to my list? Please feel free to drop another book suggestion in the comments. You can even include a link to your own book if it’s witch-free and geared for fall.
