FALL LEAVES – a book review with family connection ideas
Fall Leaves written by Loretta Holland and strikingly illustrated by Ella MacKay is the perfect book to get you in the mood for the change of seasons! It is written in a very unique format. In bold text on each page, it plays with words like “fall” and “leave” in a creative way that makes you ponder nature. For example, “FALL ARRIVES, LEAVES FALL, FLOWERS LEAVE, FALL STAYS, LEAVES LEAVE, etc. Then, underneath each bold caption is an artistic, yet informational description of the caption. It is truly unique. It is both poetic and filled with science facts.
You would be able to read the book “captions only” to a small child, or if the child is older, he will enjoy the longer informational text. Plus the stunning illustrations capture your eye on each page spread. This book lends itself to doing fun follow up activities like leaf collecting, jumping in piles of leaves, throwing rocks in streams, drinking apple cider slushies, going on hay rides, visiting pumpkin patches and the like! It’s time for fall, y’all!
After reading the book, have a conversation with your child. Here are some discussion starters:
1. What are the four seasons? What season is it now?
2. What are some unique things about the fall season?
3. What is one interesting fact that you discovered in this book?
4. What is your favorite season and why?
5. Who created all of the amazing things we see in nature?
After your conversation, do a fun fall craft! Check out this Pinterest Board with loads of ideas! Link to board
My favorite ideas from the board include making a crown from the fall leaves you collect, or leaf painting. Plan to spend some quality time with your children this fall. The memories you make together will last a lifetime.
What is your favorite thing to do in the fall with the children in your life? I would love to hear about it in the comments.
