Three Acorn Books plus family activity ideas…
Acorn Was a Little Wild written by Jen Arena and illustrated by Jessica Gibson. This book is about an acorn who takes risks and makes wild choices. Its deeper message is to be okay with life when it turns out differently than you plan. It has a fun spirit to the text and would make a great introductory book for a science unit about the life cycle of trees.
Because of an Acorn by Lola and Adam Schaefer and illustrated by Fran Preston-Gannon. This is a simple but profound book that shows how the ecosystem is connected. With only a few words on each page, the writers have a magical and lyrical tone and you are left inpired by the importance of even a small thing such as an acorn.
The Golden Acorn by Kate Hudson. This year The Golden Nut Hunt race is for teams, not individuals. Squirrel is not too excited because he knows his friends are slow and he is used to winning. In the end, he learns that winning a race is not as important as having friends to share life with. This is a great book to demonstrate to kids how to be a good sport when you lose.
Acorn Hide and Seek
With some acrylic paint, paint one (or several) of your acorns golden. Take turns hiding it (or them) either around the house or outside. You can also add to the fun by hiding MANY acorns that are not golden along with them. Make up a point system and see who finds the most points. You could also write a number value with a sharpie on some of the acorns to make it even more fun to see how many points you get (and practice your math skills).
What else can you do with acorns?
- Count them (math skills)
- Drop them into a container with tongs (from a height)
- Paint them
- Make them into monsters with google eyes
- Pretend play — Use them to cook pretend food (use muffin tins, pots and pans, and tongs), be a pirate and they are your treasure, play house and they are the food, pretend to be a squirrel getting ready for winter.
- Play catch
- Hide and Seek (like Easter eggs)
- Toss into buckets or play catch
- See how far you can throw them. Have a target you are trying to hit (like a can)
