Start the Year with Joy! By Karen Whiting
Be Silly
Children love to laugh, so infusing more joy into daily life will strengthen bonds and make your home merrier. Fill your heart with joy too, as then your joy can overflow. That can be done with a devotional that focuses on joy. Play silly games like seeing who can make someone else laugh, blow bubbles and pop them, or make silly ice cream tower sundaes.
Engage in Activities that Bring laughter
Read silly books and laugh together. Look at the pictures to laugh and smile. Read the words and chat about your own memories that connect to smile about your adventures.
Make crafts and add glitter to make it sparkle and then compliment the child on his or her sparkling smile. Children are happy with paper, crayons, and glitter glue or glue and glitter. Just place some plastic on the table where they create fun with art.
Head Outdoors
Enjoy the cooler weather. If there’s snow play in it and make snow people or forts and snowballs to whiz in the air and hit a target. Dance and jump, run and play. Take a few minutes to praise God and lift your arms up as you say the praises. Look for signs of the upcoming season. Play games like shadow tag, sports, or draw with chalk. Can you do sidewalk art messages for neighbors to read that will make them smile or laugh? Huddle together to warm up.
Enjoy Food Fun
Cook together with adding faces to foods, like cookies with faces, mini-pizzas with faces, and even veggie plates turned into faces or shapes. Stack crackers and fillings and see whose topples first. Add a new ingredient to a muffin recipe or top muffins before cookie with different toppings. Experiment with foods and try new ones. Taste the new foods and show your reaction with making faces that it is yummy, sour, sweet, or maybe not so tasty.
The idea is to add a little more joy into your days. That can also be done with encouraging words and responding to a problem with a fun thought of how it can be viewed with a bit of humor.
