The Wonder of Under
When our grandson was a toddler, he loved looking under and behind everything he encountered. Once, he found a dead yellow jacket in the folds of the curtains and promptly plopped it in his mouth and swallowed. He wondered if it tasted good. He made us wonder if he would be alright.
Children wonder about everything! In this delightful book by Cindy Lynn Sawyer, Paxton looks under the rug, the couch, and his bed. He was looking for adventure, something to cure his boredom, something, anything but all he finds is little pieces of normal this and that.
Mrs. Sawyer uses repetitive language that keep children engaged using the language to read along. Children will associate with Paxton’s curiosity of wonder. Children will completely get it with the boredom. But as most often happens, boredom leads to creativity. Paxton takes all the “trash” he finds under to create a wonder. His boredom leads to the creation of a sailboat! This idea leads to another — a voyage around the world.
Parents and teachers will enjoy reading The Wonder of Under to help inspire children to create and tell stories that will make for hours of fun and adventure.
Hope you find the wonder of an adventure. Gail Cartee
