Nighttime Nature Study for Christian Families
Summer nights can provide a unique opportunity for Christian families to explore the wonders of God’s creation under the starry sky! Moreover, children will gain a deeper appreciation of the Master’s intricate designs in the natural world– all while bonding as a family.
Here are three ideas for your family’s nighttime nature study.
Stargazing: A Window to the Heavens
The Bible tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the sheweth his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1). Few things are lovelier than a clear night sky filled with twinkling stars. So why not take it one step further and do a bit of studying as you stargaze? Although there is a plethora of scientific information concerning navigation, the atmosphere, telling time by the stars, or seasonal changes that would be interesting to pursue, simply looking upward at the stars and finding constellations or ‘pictures in the sky’ is a pleasurable pastime in its own right. How many constellations can you identify? Purchase or check out a book–or find a relevant website and start gazing at the stars.
Moon Phases and Their Meanings
Similarly, the moon is also a fascinating subject for nighttime study, and what child is not mesmerized by the ‘light of the night?’ Many storybooks have been written about the moon, and of course, most parents are very familiar with the classic, Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.
For a fun, yet educational activity, track the moon’s phases over a month and learn about its cycles. Relate the changing moon to Bible verses such as Psalm 104:19, “He appointed the moon for seasons: The sun knoweth his going down.” Use this time to talk about how God has set natural rhythms and cycles in place.
Fireflies and Bioluminescence
Fireflies or lightning bugs are fascinating creatures that sparkle and flicker in the summer woods. Light production in fireflies is due to a type of chemical reaction called bioluminescence, and the bugs light up to attract a mate.
Catch and place several fireflies in a jar with a mesh top for a few minutes. Examine these extraordinary insects that have the ability to produce cold light. Observe the phenomena of bioluminescence before gently releasing the fireflies.
Afterwards, use the opportunity to discuss how the lights of these tiny critters can remind us of Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Learn From God’s Handiwork
Nighttime nature study is a wonderful way for Christian families to connect with each other and with God’s creation. By exploring the night sky, and also reflecting on the wonders of the natural world, families can grow in their faith and appreciation of the Creator. So, make time to step outside this summer and let the night reveal the glory of God’s handiwork!

I love stargazing and learned a lot about constellations from my father.
Another potential night-time activity is to watch for an opportunity to catch a cicada in it’s pupa form that has just crawled out of the ground. This might keep you up late, but will leave a memory that will last for years. An emerging butterfly might also be an option as it often happens at night.
Use a black light to attract insects and moths. See how many you can identify.
Great ideas! There are definitely many things families can do to enjoy nature at night!
Thanks, Janice!
