Five Children’s Books Perfect for Passion Week
With the Passion Week just around the corner, now seems like a great time to look at perfect picture books for this season. Here are a few of my favorites.
Howie’s Broken Hee-Haw by Josie Siler
This award-winning picture book gives readers a fresh new look at Psalm Sunday through the eyes of the donkey Jesus rode into Jerusalem. Kids will enjoy repeating Howie’s silly braying even while they sympathize with him for feeling inferior. Besides retelling this Bible story, Siler reminds readers that they aren’t broken. Instead, they are unique and highly valued by God.
The Dance of Easter by Sally Cressman
Easter is a joyous time, and this exciting sentiment is perfectly captured by The Dance of Easter’s lyrical verses and rollicking illustrations. The story starts right by the tomb, with angels announcing the good news, “He is not here. He is alive!” From there, it explodes into happy celebration in all creation. Another award-winning book kids will want to read over and over.
What Is Easter by Michelle Medlock Adams
This non-fiction book uses rhyming text and colorful illustrations to explain what Easter is all about. Although we see some traditional activities, the author points the reader back to the idea that, at its core, Easter is about celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus.
An Easter Gift for Me and R Is for Risen: An ABC Easter Story by Crystal Bowman
This board book starts with Jesus’ birth and ministry before it goes into his death on the cross and his resurrection. The illustrations are bright and appealing, and the rhyming text remains faithful to Scripture, making this book a good learning tool to share with your kids.
Award-winning author Crystal Bowman’s other book, R Is for Risen: An ABC Easter Story, serves a dual purpose. In addition to reinforcing the letters of the alphabet, it also follows Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and travels all the way through the Resurrection to the Great Commission. Remarkably, the rhyming book stays in chronological order as it retells the story of salvation. Even better, Bowman includes a Bible verse reference on each page.
What about you? Do you have any favorite Psalm Sunday or Easter books? List them in the comments!
Enjoy!
