I love bears–Winnie the Pooh, Paddington, The Berenstains, Little Bear, the list goes on. I now have another adorable bear to add to the list, and his name is Basil Bear. Basil Bear and the Honey Jar Disaster is the first book in a new series written by Dr. Connie Palm and published by Gospel Publishing Mission. With warm and fuzzy illustrations by Nancy Blackmon, this book is a treasure!
Dr. Connie Palm grew up on a farm in southern Indiana and was one of ten children. She spent 32 years as an elementary school teacher, principal, and college instructor before going to Taiwan as a missionary and pastor’s wife. When her husband passed away, she spent four more years in Taiwan. She currently lives in south Florida, teaching classes in a local Chinese church, overseeing a ministry she started called One Small Candle, and—writing picture books about a bear named Basil.
“I wrote Basil for three reasons,” says Connie. “My husband used to say to me, ‘You should write.’ So I wanted to justify his confidence in me. Also, I wanted to give a former student, Nancy Blackmon, an opportunity to use her artistic ability for the Lord. Then, I wanted to write a decent, gentle book that would make children laugh and that would have a worthwhile thought.”
Basil Bear and the Honey Jar Disaster is the first in the Basil Bear series. In this book, Basil learns the consequence of disobedience. In later books, Basil will learn the consequences of telling half-truths, being greedy, not using his head, bullying, and finding unconditional love.
The Basil Bear series is written with an easy-to-read vocabulary under the guidelines of International English, a vocabulary of 1500 basic English words. A glossary at the back of the book defines words from the story that are slightly above the International English vocabulary.
The Basil Bear stories are funny and sweet, and gently teach important moral lessons to young children.
