Undercover Devotion Club
It happened just the other day. The mom of a ten-year-old boy was remarking about the things he does not want to do — things like go to Sunday School, read a devotional. . .
and use soap.
Ten-year-old boys are all about action and adventure.
This one, in particular, is all about baseball.
Some are all about screens.
So. . . how can we introduce preteen boys to the action and adventure in the Bible?
Let’s talk about having an undercover devotion club. (Last time I posted about a Traveling Book Club for preteen girls. You can read it here.)
WHAT YOU NEED FOR EACH BOY
- A high-interest devotional book such as Dare U 2 Open This Book
- A Bible with an awesome cover
- A small metal box or bag with a padlock
- A pair of shades for each member
- An invisible ink pen and reader (available at carnival supply stores)
THE CLUB IN ACTION
- Plan a mission briefing event.
- Each boy will be issued one of the bags (described above).
- Explain that each book is the same. Each boy may choose one of the devotions to respond to in the book he has first, using the invisible ink.
- Plan a time to meet again and exchange bags. Continue until each boy has had an opportunity to enter data (a devotion response) in each book.
- Each boy keeps one of the devotionals to complete on his own.
What a fun idea! This would be a great club for churches to use with their boys. Thanks for sharing such innovative ideas.
I love it, especially the secret spy activities. My son had a club with friends when he was a tween. He started a reading group at recess and added in Christian books. Then when they came over he had cool experiments tied to devotions that ended up in my book The One Year Devotions for Active Boys.
