Celebrate our veterans with this story of freedom and the One who gives it. The Great Majestic Fortress by Denise Davidson Mistich is a series of connected short stories that share America’s rich history, while helping young readers appreciate how freedom is a gift from our Creator. From a Native American warrior to a British solider fighting in the Revolutionary War to a runaway slave to the current men and women serving in our armed forces, these stories carry with them a common theme of listening to God and trusting in His plan.
This beautifully illustrated book includes a notes section, pages to write down what you want to remember, who and why, in addition to a “Thoughts for Teacher” section that provides comments on each story.
Overall I enjoyed this book and its powerful message. The repetition of certain lines in each story will help young people remember the focus of the book. My only wish is that it contain some dialogue. Each story focuses on one character, who is alone by or under the oak as it grows through the years. This makes the book heavy on narrative and dependent on internal thoughts for variety. Thankfully that narrative is engaging, but I found myself wanting a bit of conversation.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to homeless veterans.
I received a free electronic copy of this book from the author. This review contains my honest opinions, for which I have received no compensation.
